Several years ago, we were about to buy a house in Langley, BC.  I was in the basement of the home with the home inspector and I had noticed that I didn’t have any cell phone coverage. We were about to buy a house, with a future daycare in our basement, without any cell coverage. This could be an issue…

I have pretty good connections with our cellular network providers and I knew the right people to call about it. I mentioned my situation, and I was politely told what to do about it… MOVE. As in, move to a different house. I was also told not to worry, as there was a new cell site planned a few blocks away for next year. We decided to tough it out without basement coverage for a while. It wasn’t really going to be a huge issue yet since the daycare still needed to be constructed in our unfinished basement.

We moved into the home and I found bigger issues. I was missing phone calls, and missing text messages… and I wasn’t even in the basement. My phone was sitting on the kitchen counter and it wasn’t always ringing when it should have been. I knew some tricks to force the phone onto certain frequencies that usually worked better… usually. I found the best method was to stand by the kitchen door, with my phone in my right hand, on my left ear, and have my left thumb touching my right ear, with my pinky sticking out, and balancing on my right foot. It always worked, until I lost my balance or moved my finger or thumb.

I was now having extreme frustrations with my morning conference calls not working, and missed calls while I was the on-call tech on nights and weekends. When I REALLY needed to receive the calls, they would get missed.  Things went from bad to worse.
